Q: Why do you use Nature as examples of
organization when you
conduct team-building workshops?
"Doc's" response: Actually, Nature is
the organization of the planet.
For 4.6
billion years, experimentation in
organization has been going on in accordance
with natural laws. We
humans are part of this natural organization, one of our
planet's relatively
new creations.
In order to comprehend the age of the Earth
and appreciate how relatively recent human
life is, it is helpful to compress our
planet's 4.6-billion years into one calendar
year. In that year: the first life on
Earth appears in the oceans in May, land
plants start growing in late November,
dinosaurs roam the surface from December
15-26, human-like animals enter on
December 31, and Columbus discovers America
3 seconds before midnight.
When one takes into account that humans
are new to the planet, our
attempts at organization have only been
going on for less than a second of
time since the industrial revolution.
We started with assembly lines, now
we have global corporations.
For most of our existence on the planet, we
humans have been deeply connected to Nature
and Nature was our teacher. Now we
have attempted to separate (real separation
is not possible) which has resulted in
increased stress in our lives. We
conduct our business in little cubicles with
no windows and communicate by e-mails and
faxes. First we lost contact with
Nature and now we are beginning to lose our
relationship with other human beings.
No wonder we feel stressed, isolated and
demoralized.
Many organization issues (communication,
diversity, team-building) are the result of
the way we are attempting to organize human
activities. We can learn how to
address these organizational issues by
looking for the wisdom in the way Nature is
organized. This wisdom has been gained
by trial and error through billions of years
of change and chaos on a very dynamic
planet.
Rather than arrogantly believing we are not
part of Nature or that it is background
scenery, we need to return to respecting
this high level of creative organization and
again begin to learn from Nature.
Q: Why do you incorporate low impact outdoor
activities as part of your retreats?
Doc's
response: My preference is to hold
meetings in supportive natural surrounding
rather than in stifling hotel conference
rooms and to integrate as many energizing
and inspiring nature activities into the
workshops as possible. Team-building
retreats are more than a set of outdoor
activities. Interactive outside group
activities help groups address their
organization issues as well as help
participants begin to feel connected to
their natural roots and get back into synch
with being part of Nature. I
incorporate Nature as much as possible in
all my organization work because Nature is
the expert on chaos, change and creativity!
